Hypoglycemia is the medical term for low blood sugar. Miniature size combine with rapid growth sets Yorkie puppies up for hypoglycemia or low blood sugar, one of the common condition and dangers in tiny teeny toy breed especially young puppies. In puppies it is a condition that results in a drastic drop in blood sugar levels. It is common in toy breeds but 100% preventable. It is most common in puppies from 2 - 6 months of age, but also has occur in adult toy breed dogs as well.
Cause Of Hypoglycemia
Yorkie puppy's blood sugar level can drop for many reasons. Some of the causes are:
1.Over handling and not allowing your puppy to get enough rest (they should sleep close to 75% of the time when you first get them! Don't play too hard with your puppy at first, limit sessions to about 15 - 20 minutes)
2. The puppy missed meal or refusing to eat (give um a little nutri-cal)
3. Change of environment or food
4. Stressful Situations (travel, vet visit etc)

Symptoms Of Hypoglycemia
- Lethargy or weakness
- Loss of appetite
- Wobbly / Dizzy gait
- Frothing or drooling from the mouth
- puppy's gum turn pale almost grayish
- Subnormal body temperature
- Disorientation
- Trembling seizer or shaking (often mistaken as a cold or nervousness)
- Loss of consciousness ( in severe case )
- Puppy hypoglycemia can usually be overcome by feeding frequent meals, since yorkie cannot eat a lot at one time, the literally run out of fuel quickly. When it comes to hypoglycemia in tiny Yorkies, it’s best to avoid an attack in the first place.
- Make sure your puppy gets enough rest not over play more than 30 minutes and let them feed freely, make sure you see they eat their food. You may also feed them 4 or 5 times a day with a diet that is high in protein.
- Honey -Nut Cheerios are wonderful for your yorkie puppy to snack on. The sugar helps keep their blood sugar up and prevents hypoglycemia in your puppy. Marshmallow are also great for tiny yorkie puppies to play with, they just love to carry them around and chew on, the sugar will keeps them from becoming hypoglycemia. I will recommend only try this trick for the first few weeks after bringing your puppy to their new home.
- If your puppy shows symptoms of hypoglycemia, treat it immediately before the condition get worst. To treat hypoglycemia in puppy / dog, the initial thing you have to do is elevate the blood sugar by given them some honey or maple syrup you have in hand at home. You also can buy a supplement from pet store such as NutriCal or NutriStat ready in hand in case you may give to your puppy or you can give your new tiny puppy daily for first 2 - 3 weeks. Place the supplement or sugar on the tongue and gums and then make sure your puppy stay warm with warm blanket.
- Lack of fluids and hypoglycemia in yorkie often go together. If your puppy conscious and refuses to drink then do your best get fluids or pedialyte to your puppy. You may use of an eye dropper to get the necessary fluids into your puppy 's body.
- Always keep the right room temperature. It's important to know your yorkie and his/her personality as well as the routine they have.
